One of the most significant changes in digital commerce has been the ability of small businesses to reach customers far beyond their local markets. Etsy has played an important role in that transformation by creating a marketplace where independent sellers can present handmade, vintage, personalized and creatively designed products to consumers around the world.

The platform has developed into something larger than an online marketplace for crafts. Etsy now connects millions of sellers with a global customer base while building technology designed to make distinctive products easier to discover.

The scale of that ecosystem is substantial. At the end of June 2026, Etsy reported approximately 87 million active buyers and 5.7 million active sellers. Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales increased 7.5 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2026, reaching approximately $2.6 billion for the quarter.

These figures show why Etsy remains an important part of the independent commerce economy.

The platform gives small businesses access to demand that would otherwise require significant investment in marketing, technology and international distribution.

Products With Identity

Etsy's marketplace operates differently from a conventional mass-market retailer.

A consumer visiting Amazon, Walmart or another large e-commerce platform may primarily compare price, delivery speed and product specifications. Etsy creates a different purchasing environment. Buyers can discover handmade jewelry, personalized gifts, vintage furniture, artwork, wedding products, clothing and home accessories that carry a stronger sense of individuality.

That difference has become one of Etsy's most valuable assets.

The company has more than 100 million items available across its marketplace, creating an enormous inventory of products that are made, designed or handpicked by creative entrepreneurs. Etsy has described this uniqueness as one of the defining characteristics of its marketplace.

For sellers, this creates an opportunity to compete through differentiation rather than scale.

A small jewelry studio cannot necessarily compete with a global manufacturer on production volume. It can, however, compete through design, customization, craftsmanship and the relationship it creates with its customers.

That is where Etsy has built much of its commercial identity.

Personalization Is Becoming More Valuable

Personalization has become one of the strongest categories within Etsy's marketplace.

Consumers increasingly look for products connected to specific occasions, people or identities. A personalized wedding invitation, engraved necklace, custom artwork or made-to-order home product can carry a different perceived value from an identical mass-produced item.

For sellers, customization can create higher-value transactions while also providing a way to establish a recognizable brand.

This is especially relevant during periods such as weddings, birthdays, holidays and other personal milestones. These occasions generate demand that cannot always be satisfied through standardized products.

Etsy's recent performance suggests that this category remains important. The company reported strong performance across gifting occasions in 2026 and said birthdays and weddings both recorded double-digit year-over-year growth during the first half of the year.

The commercial opportunity is therefore connected to more than product variety.

It is connected to the reasons people buy.

The Marketplace Is Becoming More Intelligent

Etsy is also changing the way customers discover products.

Traditional e-commerce relies heavily on keywords, categories and filters. Consumers generally know what they want and attempt to describe it through a search query.

Artificial intelligence is changing that behavior.

A shopper can now describe an idea in natural language and expect an intelligent system to interpret the request. Instead of searching for a specific keyword, a customer might describe the recipient, occasion, style, budget and personal preferences.

Etsy sees this shift as an important opportunity because its sellers already provide products with rich descriptions and highly specific characteristics.

The company has been developing machine learning and AI-powered curation to improve personalization and recommendations within its marketplace. In its second quarter 2026 shareholder letter, Etsy said these efforts were designed to create deeper personalization and fresher recommendations.

This could fundamentally change how Etsy's enormous product catalog is used.

The challenge is no longer simply having enough products.

The challenge is helping the right person discover the right product.

Etsy Is Moving Into AI-Powered Shopping

The company's AI strategy extends beyond its own platform.

In September 2025, Etsy announced a partnership with OpenAI that allowed users in the United States to discover, browse and purchase Etsy products through ChatGPT. A shopper could ask for a product recommendation and receive relevant Etsy listings as part of the conversation.

The company then expanded this strategy through a partnership with Google.

In January 2026, Etsy announced that eligible products would become available for purchase through Google's AI-powered shopping experiences, including AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app for signed-in users in the United States. Etsy also said AI-driven traffic had increased nearly 700 percent during the 2025 holiday season compared with the previous year.

These developments point toward a different future for online shopping.

The consumer may no longer begin by visiting Etsy.

They may begin by asking an AI assistant a question.

That distinction is commercially significant.

If someone asks an AI system to find a unique anniversary gift, a handmade piece of furniture or a personalized wedding product, Etsy wants its sellers to appear within that recommendation process.

The marketplace therefore becomes part of a wider discovery ecosystem.

The Seller Remains at the Center

Despite the growing role of AI, Etsy's most important asset remains its seller community.

The company has repeatedly positioned human creativity as a central part of its differentiation. In 2026, Etsy said that signals such as craftsmanship, production processes and maker stories could influence buyer behavior. Early tests indicated that making these elements more visible could increase engagement and buyer confidence.

This creates an interesting relationship between technology and human creativity.

AI can help a shopper discover a product.

The product itself can still represent the work of an individual creator.

The seller's story can remain part of the purchasing experience.

The technology therefore becomes a distribution mechanism rather than the product itself.

That distinction may become increasingly valuable as digital commerce becomes more automated.

A New Opportunity for Small Businesses

For an independent business, Etsy can provide several functions at once.

It can serve as a storefront, discovery channel, payment environment and customer acquisition platform. A small business can enter the marketplace without developing every part of its own e-commerce infrastructure.

This reduces some of the barriers to international commerce.

A designer operating from a small studio can potentially reach customers in markets thousands of miles away. A jewelry maker can sell to consumers outside the city where the products are produced. A digital creator can distribute products without physical inventory.

The marketplace can also serve as a testing environment.

A seller can introduce a product, monitor customer response and identify which designs or categories generate demand. Successful products can then be expanded through additional channels.

This makes Etsy relevant not just to established businesses but also to entrepreneurs testing their first commercial ideas.

Digital Products Expand the Model

Etsy's economic model also extends beyond physical goods.

Digital products such as templates, printable designs, planners, artwork and other downloadable assets allow creators to sell without traditional inventory and logistics requirements.

For these businesses, the economics can be particularly attractive.

A physical product requires materials, manufacturing, storage, packaging and shipping. A digital product can potentially be created once and sold repeatedly.

This creates a different form of scalability.

The seller can focus on design, positioning, discovery and customer experience while the platform handles much of the infrastructure surrounding the transaction.

The broader trend is important because the creator economy increasingly includes businesses that exist almost entirely online.

Mobile Commerce Is Strengthening

Etsy's mobile business has also become an important part of its growth strategy.

During the second quarter of 2026, mobile app GMS increased 12.5 percent year over year. The app accounted for approximately 47 percent of Etsy marketplace GMS, representing an increase from the previous year.

Mobile creates more opportunities for personalized discovery.

A consumer can open the application without a specific shopping objective and encounter products based on previous activity, interests or seasonal occasions.

That turns Etsy into more of a discovery environment.

The distinction matters because impulse discovery can increase purchase frequency. A customer who did not intend to buy anything may encounter an unusual product and decide that it is worth purchasing.

For a marketplace built around distinctive products, this behavior can be particularly valuable.

Loyalty Is Another Growth Opportunity

Etsy's next challenge is not simply acquiring more users.

It is encouraging existing users to return more frequently.

The company has identified active buyers, purchase frequency and average order value as key drivers of marketplace growth. Its recent results showed improving trends across these areas, including an increase in GMS per active buyer.

This creates a strong incentive to build better recommendations, more relevant shopping occasions and loyalty initiatives.

The objective is straightforward.

If a consumer thinks about Etsy only when searching for a specific handmade product, the relationship remains occasional.

If the same consumer begins using Etsy for gifts, home decoration, weddings, seasonal shopping and personal purchases, the marketplace becomes part of their regular shopping behavior.

That shift could significantly increase the lifetime value of a buyer.

Global Commerce Without a Traditional Retail Network

Etsy also demonstrates how global commerce can work without a conventional physical retail network.

A small business does not need stores in New York, London, Paris or Tokyo to reach consumers in those markets. A digital marketplace can provide access to international demand from a single location.

At the same time, international commerce introduces challenges around shipping, customs, currencies, customer expectations and local market conditions.

Etsy's ability to manage these complexities at scale creates value for sellers that may lack the resources to build their own international infrastructure.

The opportunity becomes even more interesting when combined with AI-powered discovery.

A consumer in another country can potentially describe what they want in natural language and receive a recommendation for a product created by a small independent seller thousands of miles away.

That is a very different model from traditional retail.

Etsy's Next Chapter

Etsy's recent performance suggests that its marketplace is entering a stronger phase.

The company reported its third consecutive quarter of year-over-year Etsy marketplace GMS growth in the second quarter of 2026. Active buyers also improved sequentially, while GMS per active buyer increased 2.8 percent year over year.

At the same time, Etsy is investing in AI-powered discovery, personalization, loyalty and seller tools.

Its partnerships with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Stripe demonstrate how the company is preparing for a shopping environment where consumers may discover products through AI assistants rather than traditional search engines.

The most interesting part of Etsy's future may therefore have little to do with becoming another giant general-purpose retailer.

Its opportunity lies in protecting what makes the marketplace different.

The company has millions of sellers creating products that are difficult to replicate at mass scale. It has a large catalog of highly distinctive products and a consumer base interested in individuality and personalization.

AI can potentially make that inventory easier to navigate.

The technology can help consumers find something specific without knowing exactly where to look.

That creates a new relationship between independent businesses and global consumers.

The seller creates the product.

Etsy provides the marketplace.

AI increasingly helps the customer find it.

This model could become one of the most important developments in the next phase of digital commerce. As shopping becomes more conversational and increasingly mediated by intelligent systems, the ability to connect consumers with products that feel personal may become more valuable.

Etsy has spent years building the supply side of that equation.

Its next challenge is making sure those products remain discoverable wherever the next generation of shopping begins.
