Liverpool FC and Turkish Airlines have announced a five-year partnership that will begin on June 1, 2027, making the Istanbul-based airline the club's Main Club Partner from the 2027/28 season. Turkish Airlines branding will appear on the front of Liverpool's men's, women's and Academy match shirts. The agreement marks the first change to Liverpool's main club partner in 17 years, bringing Standard Chartered's long tenure to a close while keeping the bank within the club's commercial ecosystem as a Global Partner.

The reported value of the agreement makes the deal one of the largest sponsorship commitments in Premier League history. Liverpool and Turkish Airlines have not publicly disclosed the financial terms, while Reuters reports that the partnership is understood to be worth more than £300 million over five years. The number matters, but the strategic logic behind the agreement matters more.

Why Is Liverpool Such A Valuable Global Platform?

Liverpool offers something that extends well beyond matchday audiences. Its supporter base spans every continent, while the club has built one of the strongest international identities in global football. For an airline, that creates a rare combination of brand visibility, cultural relevance and access to audiences across multiple markets.

Turkish Airlines already has a long history of using sport as a global brand-building platform. Its portfolio includes major football properties, including UEFA Champions League partnerships, alongside sponsorships across different sports. The Liverpool agreement gives that strategy one of its most visible assets yet.

Why Does The Shirt Matter?

The front of a football shirt has become one of the most valuable forms of recurring brand exposure in global sport. It appears across live broadcasts, social media, news coverage, merchandise, stadium photography and millions of fan-generated images.

Liverpool itself describes the position as one historically reserved for long-term and meaningful partnerships. Turkish Airlines is therefore buying more than advertising inventory. It is entering a highly recognisable piece of Liverpool's institutional identity.

What Makes The Partnership Particularly Relevant For Turkish Airlines?

The strategic fit is built around international mobility. Liverpool has a global fan base, while Turkish Airlines operates from Istanbul as a major international hub and says it flies to more countries than any other airline. Both brands therefore operate through networks that connect different markets, cultures and consumer groups.

There is another layer to the relationship. Liverpool and Istanbul already share a powerful historical association through the 2005 Champions League final, when Liverpool completed its famous comeback against AC Milan at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium. Liverpool's commercial leadership specifically referenced those memories when discussing the new partnership.

What Changes For Liverpool?

For Liverpool, the agreement creates a new commercial chapter while preserving continuity with Standard Chartered. The bank will remain connected to the club as a Global Partner from the 2027/28 season, allowing Liverpool to retain an established corporate relationship while opening its most visible commercial asset to a new global brand.

The timing also matters. Liverpool is entering a period in which commercial scale has become increasingly connected to sporting competitiveness. The largest European clubs are competing for global audiences, premium sponsorships, international tours, media rights and increasingly sophisticated commercial ecosystems. A shirt partnership at this level becomes part of that broader economic infrastructure.

Is This Really A Sponsorship Deal?

Increasingly, the answer depends on how the partnership is activated. The strongest sports partnerships create relationships between brands and audiences rather than simply placing a logo on a shirt.

For Turkish Airlines, Liverpool provides access to one of football's most global communities. For Liverpool, the airline brings an international network, travel infrastructure and a brand with an established presence across multiple continents. The commercial opportunity lies in what the two companies can build around that shared footprint.

The deal therefore illustrates a broader shift in sports marketing. Global brands are increasingly using football clubs as platforms for international positioning, while elite clubs are treating sponsorship as a strategic business relationship rather than a conventional advertising transaction.

When Turkish Airlines appears on Liverpool's shirt from the 2027/28 season, the significance will extend beyond the logo itself. The partnership will place an Istanbul-based global company at the centre of one of the world's most recognisable sports brands, creating a commercial bridge between aviation, football and international consumer markets.

For Turkish Airlines, the question now is how much value it can build around that visibility. For Liverpool, the question is how far its commercial model can continue to scale. The answers will determine whether this becomes one of football's biggest sponsorships or one of its most effective global brand partnerships.
