Istanbul is making a bigger case for its place in the global startup economy.

The inaugural GITEX Ai Turkiye opened in Istanbul on September 9, bringing together more than 350 technology companies and startups, global investors, major technology companies, policymakers and executives. More than 100 investors from 20 countries, representing more than $100 billion in assets under management, are attending the two-day event. Companies from Turkiye's Turcorn 100 programme are also exhibiting.

The numbers matter, but the larger story is about what Turkiye is trying to build around them. Istanbul is increasingly being positioned as a meeting point between European, Middle Eastern, Asian and African technology markets. GITEX Ai Turkiye is putting that geographic advantage into a business context by connecting Turkish startups with international capital, technology companies and potential markets.

Why Does GITEX Ai Turkiye Matter?

Technology ecosystems become stronger when entrepreneurs can reach capital, customers and international partners without building those relationships from scratch in every market.

That is one of the opportunities GITEX Ai Turkiye is creating.

The event brings together startups working across AI, fintech, cybersecurity, healthcare, enterprise technology, sustainable agriculture and infrastructure. Global companies including Google Cloud, NVIDIA, AWS, SAP, Huawei, Dell Technologies and HPE are participating alongside Turkish companies and technology organisations.

This creates a different environment from a conventional technology exhibition. The value is increasingly found in the connections between companies, investors and markets.

For a Turkish startup, meeting an investor from the United States, a corporate partner from Europe or a potential customer from the Gulf can change the scale of the opportunity available to the company.

Is Turkiye Building A Stronger Startup Economy?

There is evidence that the ecosystem is expanding.

Turkish startups raised $559 million in the first quarter of 2026, more than seven times the figure for the same period a year earlier. The country now has more than 13,000 technology startups operating across 114 technoparks, alongside more than 1,700 R&D and design centres.

The Turcorn 100 programme represents another part of this development. Its purpose is to help high-growth Turkish companies expand internationally and progress toward unicorn status. Its companies are present at GITEX Ai Turkiye, putting a significant part of Turkiye's scale-up pipeline in front of international investors.

The more important question is what happens after these companies leave the exhibition floor.

Can Turkish Startups Turn Capital Into Global Growth?

Access to capital can accelerate a company, but capital alone does not create international scale.

A startup entering the global market needs customers, distribution, strong positioning, talent and the ability to adapt its product to different markets. It also needs a business model that can support expansion beyond Turkiye.

This is where the international composition of GITEX Ai Turkiye becomes particularly relevant.

More than 100 investors from 20 countries are coming to Istanbul, with participating funds and investment groups from the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, the Gulf and other markets. The event is designed around investor matchmaking, fundraising, partnerships and access to international markets.

For Turkish founders, that creates a direct route toward international conversations.

The challenge is turning those conversations into companies that can compete globally.

Why Is Istanbul Important?

Istanbul has always benefited from its position between major economic regions. The city's role in technology is now increasingly being built around the same geographic advantage.

The objective is larger than attracting international visitors to a technology event. Istanbul can function as a bridge between companies looking to enter Turkiye and Turkish companies looking to expand into Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and other markets.

GITEX Ai Turkiye is designed around that idea. Organisers describe the event as a platform connecting Turkiye and Eurasia with international technology, capital and market opportunities.

If that position continues to strengthen, Istanbul could become more than a domestic startup centre.

It could become a regional capital market for technology companies.

What Does AI Change For Turkiye?

Artificial intelligence adds another dimension to the opportunity.

AI lowers some of the barriers that previously prevented smaller companies from competing in sophisticated technology markets. A relatively small team can now build products, test markets and develop solutions with capabilities that once required much larger organisations.

But infrastructure still matters.

Turkiye has allocated $3 billion to data centre and AI investment this year and is seeking a further $10 billion from the private sector, with a target of one gigawatt of data centre capacity by 2030. The national AI Action Plan also sets out training programmes for thousands of advanced AI specialists and a far larger number of AI application professionals.

That means the next phase of the Turkish technology economy will involve more than startups.

It will require computing infrastructure, energy, investment, talent, research and companies capable of commercialising technology at international scale.

Can Turkiye Export Its Own Technology And Brands?

This may be the most important question behind the current momentum.

Turkiye already has a substantial manufacturing and export economy. The next stage is about increasing the number of companies that export their own products, technologies and brands.

That distinction matters.

Building technology for another global company creates economic value. Building a Turkish company that owns the technology, product, customer relationship and brand can create a different level of long-term value.

The growing startup ecosystem gives Turkiye an opportunity to move further in that direction.

AI can help Turkish companies develop products faster. International investment can provide capital for expansion. Istanbul can provide access to multiple markets. Strong brands can then turn those capabilities into lasting global businesses.

What Happens After GITEX?

The success of GITEX Ai Turkiye will ultimately be measured outside the event itself.

How many Turkish startups secure international investment? How many enter new markets? How many establish partnerships with global companies? How many become recognisable technology brands outside Turkiye?

Those outcomes will matter more than the number of exhibitors or investors attending the event.

Turkiye has spent years developing an industrial and export economy. It is now building a stronger technology and entrepreneurship layer around that foundation.

Istanbul's opportunity is to connect the two.

The next stage of Turkiye's technology story will not be defined by how many startups it creates. It will be defined by how many of those companies can build products, brands and technologies that the world chooses to buy.

GITEX Ai Turkiye is putting that ambition in front of global capital.

The next question is whether Istanbul can turn that attention into companies that scale far beyond Turkiye.
